Cervix is a part of the female reproductive organ situated at the end of the uterus and the beginning of the vagina. It allows fluids to enter and exit the uterus.
During intercourse, the cervix secretes a non-acidic mucus that makes a safe passageway for the ejaculated semen to pass through.
During pregnancy, the cervix holds the foetus in the womb by forming a mucus plug.
During delivery, the mucus plug dissolves, and the cervix shortens and turns soft paving the way for the process of delivery.
A short cervix is a condition where the length of the cervix is shorter than normal. You can check for this during your ultrasound. It is not a regular check-up but if you have had

Family history of premature birth
A short cervix is one of the causes of the above conditions.
There are two ways to protect the foetus when you have a short cervix. They are,
Cerclage: Cervical cerclage is a procedure where the opening of the cervix will be closed with sutures. This procedure prevents preterm birth and miscarriages. The procedure might cause mild cramping or discomfort. It is advised to take it easy for 10 days until the sutures have healed and then take up exercises. You can go home on the same day as the procedure.
Progesterone: It is a hormone that is used to prevent preterm pregnancy. When you have a short cervix and are having one baby, your doctor might recommend progesterone. If the conditions vary from what is mentioned earlier, progesterone is not advised.
