During pregnancy, the hormones go haywire and it’s a rollercoaster of desires. It brings about a lot of changes including the verdict on the drive to have sex – you may be either have a drive for intercourse or find that you lack the desire for it altogether. It is absolutely safe to have sex during pregnancy unless the doctors advise otherwise. To be more precise, intercourse is safe once the baby is fully formed as the penetration does not go beyond the vagina and the fetus is unaffected. Deep penetration is whole different case, so it is wise to be careful and have some respect for the unborn.

When to avoid intercourse during pregnancy?

It is better to avoid sex during the first two months of the pregnancy during which period the desire is also low.

Cervical incompetence is another case when one avoids sex. Incompetent cervix is when the cervix opens too early during pregnancy which can lead to miscarriage or premature birth. Sex should also be avoided when one is having twins.

Low placenta may lead to heavy bleeding which is a scenario where sex should be avoided altogether. It is also best to not have intercourse if one experiences pain.

# Sleeping positions

Here are some tips on the right sleeping positions during various stages of pregnancy.

During the first trimester, it is advisable to Sleep on Side (SOS) and avoid sleeping on the stomach. One can also lie down on the back during this period.

After five months, sleeping on the side is a must, preferably on the left side with cushion easing the back and in between legs. Sleeping on the stomach and on the back must be avoided during this stage.
